The Beer Drinkers Layover: DRAFT Magazine’s Airport Guide to Beer Hunting*

Unbeknownst to most weary travelers, airports across the country are now serving up award-winning local microbrews, but you have to know where they are to take advantage.

The May/June issue of DRAFT magazine highlights the best airports for thirty travelers whose flights have been delayed and which airports to avoid. Airports with award-winning local microbrews:

1)     Philadelphia International Airport: Thanks to Jet Rock, Philly features the rare jewel of a big-selection airport bar in not one, nut four terminals. The rock ‘n’ roll-themed restaurants in terminals B, C, and D pull 48 taps (24 in F) with a mix of local micros and big-brewery lagers.Recommended Pint: Victory Hop Devil

2) Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport: Grab a steak and pint at Ike’s near Checkpoint 1 at MSP. With eight taps, the bar pours local favorites from Surly and Summit brewing companies. Rock Bottom (at the intersection of concourses c and D) also features locally brewed ales, plus four bottles from Boulder Beer. Watch out; Rock Bottom fills up quickly. Recommended Pint: Surly Bender

3)JFK International Airport: JFK may be the busiest New York airport, but it also has the most plentiful craft beer selection with two Sam Adams (terminals 3 and 4) and two Brooklyn Brewery (terminals 1 and 4) bars. If that’s not enough, the NY Sport Bar and Grill (terminal 6) features 40 taps of craft and international beers. Recommended Pint: Brooklyn Lager

4) Boston Logan Airport: Aside from the obvious hometown favorites, San Adams Boston Brewhouse (Terminal C), Logan also holds the Harpoon Tap Room (Terminal A), with six beers on tap served in proper glassware. All employees at the Harpoon bar know their beer, thank to a mandatory course in craft beer held at the brewery, and are quick with recommendations. Recommended Pint: Harpoon Munich Dark

5) Seattle-Tacoma International Airport: Seattle is a beer haven, and so is its airport, Sea-Tac. The comfortable and amusingly adorned Africa Lounge (Concourse A) pours all four offerings from Mac and Jack’s Brewery, while the Alaska Lodge provides suds from another Northwestern favorite, Alaskan Brewing Company. The Mountain Room Bar rounds our Sea-Tac’s trifecta of great beer bars with local and national craft brews. Recommended Pint: Mac African Amber

6) Los Angeles International Airport: Three small but promising brewery outlets dot LAX with a range of American and classic European beers. San Diego’s Karl Strauss Brewing (Terminal 7) and local Manhattan Beach Brewing (Terminal 4) provide fine sample of American styles, while a Gordon Biersch (Terminal 1) represents Old World brewing. Recommended Pint: Gordon Biersch Hefeweizen

7) Salt Lake City International Airport: Salt Lake City is the last town where you’d expect to find a beer-friendly airport, but it actually has two great pubs from award-winning local brewers: Wasatch (Terminal 2, Concourse D) and Squatters (Terminal 2, Concourse c). Unlike nearly all airport pubs, Squatters Pub is actually run by the brewery, which ensures that a knowledgeable and passionate staff is pouring their 10 selections.Recommended Pint: Squatters Full-Suspension Pale Ale

8)Washington, D.C. Dulles International Airport: Virginia brewery Old Dominion (Concourse B) deserves major recognition for being the only airport bar to serve a wood-aged beer. Gordon Biersch (Concourse D) also serves up four flagship beers, if you’re in the mood for a classic German style. Recommended Pint: Dominion Oak Barrel Stout

9) Denver International Airport: One of the West Coast’s craft beer meccas, Denver International doesn’t disappoint. A Rock Bottom Restaurant (Concourse C) provides safe but flavorful taps, while nearby Timberline Steaks and Grill (Concourse C) pours an array of local brews. New Belgium provides the brewery’s standard lineup, including the coveted Fat Tire Amber Ale. Recommended Pint: New Belgium 1554 Brussels Style Black Ale

10) Portland International Airport: Portland is serious about its beer, and the airport shows it. Laurelwood Brewing’s two pubs (concourses A and E) offer top-notch organic ales, while Rogue (Concourse D) offers another eight brews alongside their own rums and gin. Recommended Pint: Laurelwood Free Range Red

11) Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport: The cozy Bluegrass Brewing Company (Concourse C) give a hint of what it’s like to sit on the Mason-Dixon line, while Sam Adams Celebrates Cincinnati (Concourse A) provides an escape if you’re not feeling up to that cultural exchange. Either option provides a tasty escape from long security lines. Recommended Pint: Bluegrass Dark Star Porter

12) St. Louis Lambert International Airport: Brewing in the shadow of Anheuser-Bush, Schlafly Beer did the sensible ting and crafted fill-flavored ales that blow light lasers right out of your glass. The Schlafly Taproom (Terminal B) showcase five of its best brands that show no fear when it comes to taste. Recommended Pint: Dry –Hopped American Pale Ale

13) Cleveland Hopkins International Airport: Tucked away on the quieter side of the airport, Great Lakes Brewing’s bar (Concourse A) is easy to miss, but worth finding. Three mainstay beers plus a seasonal ale are available in a sampler that can make the worst layover seem like a blessing Recommended Pint: Holy Moses White Ale

14) Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport: SweetWater brews up aggressive West Coast-style ales in the unsuspecting South, and your taste buds stand to benefit. In fact, the SweetWater Draft House will make sure of that with four delicious, unfiltered beers.Recommended Pint: SweetWater IPA

Airports To Avoid

Not all airports are as enlightened as in Portland’s and Seattle’s. If you can, route your flights around these major beer wastelands:

OREGON BREWERS BREAK RECORD PRODUCTION NUMBERS

PORTLAND, Ore. (April 24, 2008) – Figures released today by the Oregon Brewers Guild show 2007 was a banner year for Oregon’s craft brewing industry as production across the state grew at a rate of 8.1 percent.  Total beer production for the state was approximately 860,000 barrels, or 285 million bottles of beer.  That is an increase of more than 64,000 barrels, up from 796,000 barrels in 2006.

The industry posted strong growth despite increases in hop and barley prices, the two main ingredients in craft beer.  Portland, Oregon currently has 32 microbreweries within its city limits, more than any other city in the world.  The state of Oregon has 64 brewing companies operating 90 brewing facilities, with strong growth anticipated throughout 2008.

“The impact of the brewing industry stretches far beyond the breweries themselves,” said Brian Butenschoen, Executive Director of the Oregon Brewers Guild.  “A strong production year supports a variety of local products including barley, hops, yeast and glass producers as well as providing nearly 5,000 family wage jobs and a draw for tourism across the state.”

Oregonians don’t just love to make great beer, they love to drink it, too. Of the beer brewed in-state, more than 11.4 percent, or 308,000 barrels, were purchased and consumed in Oregon.  For draft beer, that percentage is even higher, with Oregon breweries producing 42 percent of all draft beer consumed in the state. This is the highest percentage of local craft draft beer consumption in the country.  2007 marks the first year that Oregon brewers have sold more than 300,000 barrels in state. A barrel is equal to 31 gallons or 13.77 cases or 331 bottles of beer.

“For years we’ve been producing some of the best and most unique beers in the world,” says Oregon Brewers Guild President Van Havig.  “No wonder Oregon is known as Beervana and has become a mecca for craft beer enthusiasts.”

Oregon’s largest craft beer producer is Widmer Brothers Brewing Company of Portland, which produced 283,000 barrels in 2007.  During 2007 one of Oregon's smallest breweries to open, the Heater-Allen Brewery in McMinnville, produced 36 Barrels.

The Oregon Brewers Guild is Oregon’s non-profit trade association for the state’s independent breweries. The Guild, which receives no state funding, comprises 59 brewing companies, 30 associate or supplier members and more than 1,860 enthusiast members or S.N.O.B.s (Supporters of Native Oregon Beer). Portland Reaffirms Position as Craft Beer Capitol of the United States

Two Oregon Breweries Win Grand Champion Brewery Awards at the 2008 World Beer Cup

PORTLAND, Ore. (April 29, 2008) – Five Portland breweries claimed a total of nine medals at the 2008 World Beer Cup held Saturday, April 19th in San Diego, California giving Portland the distinction of being the most medaled city in the world’s most prestigious international brewing competition.

BridgePort Brewing Co., Hopworks Urban Brewery, Pyramid Breweries and Widmer Brothers Brewing Co. led the way with two medals each.  Laurelwood Brewing Co. claimed one medal from the elite panel of international judges who awarded 268 medals from among the 2,864 different beers from 644 breweries across 91 beer styles.

Highlights from the 2008 World Beer Cup included two Oregon brewmasters winning the prestigious Grand Champion Brewery award.  Grand Champion Brewery awards are awarded in five different brewery size categories.

Tonya Cornett of Bend Brewing Company in Bend became the first woman ever to win Champion Brewmaster honors.  She collected two gold medals to earn the title of Champion Brewery in the Small Brewpub category.

Darron R.S. Welch of Pelican Pub and Brewery in Pacific City was the World Beer Cup Champion Brewery and Brewmaster in the Large Brewpub category.  No craft brewmaster in the U.S. has won more Champion Brewmaster awards between the World Beer Cup and the Great American Beer Festival.

“This is just one more example of why Oregon overall, and Portland in particular, is the craft brewing capitol of the U.S. and a craft beer lovers Beervana.  In Oregon you can head to the coast where breweries won six medals, or you can head to the high desert to Bend, where breweries there won three gold medals.  No matter where you travel in Oregon you can find world-class beer made locally,” said Oregon Brewers Guild Executive Director Brian Butenschoen, noting that Oregon breweries claimed a total of 18 medals in the competition.

Bend Brewing Co. won two gold medals, one in the American-Style Dark Lager category and one in the Strong Ale Category to win the Champion Brewery in the Small Brewpub Category.  “I’ve been working so hard, for so long to systematically make my beers better, that to win two Gold medals is confirmation that I have been on the right path all along.” said Tonya Cornett, of her Champion Brewery honors.

Widmer Brothers Brewing Co. won gold in the American-Style Pale Ale category with Widmer Pale Ale and gold in the American-Style Hefeweizen category for Widmer Hefeweizen – the beer that helped launch that style to prominence. “We’ve been at it out here longer than anywhere else,” said Kurt Widmer of Widmer Brothers. “You are only as good as your competition and in Oregon the competition is excellent.”

After blending and settling, the unfiltered beer was bottled in 22-ounce bottles. Stop by the BridgePort Brewpub on Thursday, April 24th from 5 – 8PM for the release party and you’ll be able to meet Brewmaster Karl Ockert, as well as Portland model Bernie Dexter, the label's pin-up girl. Pyramid Crystal Wheat Ale Wins Another Gold Medal at the 2008 World Beer Cup

Pyramid Crystal Wheat Ale, recently launched in the Pacific Northwest, won yet another gold medal at the 2008 World Beer Cup this past weekend in the American Style Wheat Beer category. Crystal Wheat Ale has until recently been available only at Pyramids own Alehouses.

Since its inception in 2005, just three years ago, Crystal Wheat Ale has won an amazing number of awards, including medals at the Great American Beer Festival in 2005 (Silver), 2006 (Gold) and 2007 (Gold), as well as a medal at the World Beer Cup in 2006 (Bronze). The Company began distributing Crystal Wheat Ale throughout the Pacific Northwest this spring.

This latest recognition for Crystal Wheat Ale at the World Beer Cup validates our decision to launch the brand throughout the Pacific Northwest, said Paul Curhan, Vice President of Marketing, Pyramid Breweries. Craft beer fans are responding with a big thumbs up to the refreshingly flavorful taste of Crystal Wheat.

The award is a tribute to our talented brewing team, brewing capabilities and expertise in making the best wheat beers, said George Arnold, Master Brewer, Pyramid Breweries.

Crystal Wheat Ale was inspired by Pyramids very first beer in 1984 Wheaten Ale which was one of the first year-round wheat beers brewed in America since Prohibition. Crystal Wheat Ale builds on Pyramids more than two decades of experience making the best wheat beers. Pyramids flagship American-style unfiltered wheat ale - Hefeweizen - has won four medals over the past decade, including a medal at the World Beer Cup in 2006 (Bronze) and at the Great American Beer Festival in 2004 (Gold).

This year, 644 breweries from 58 countries and 45 U.S. states vied for awards at the World Beer Cup with 2,864 beers entered in 91 beer style categories.

FULL SAIL BREWING CO. WINS SUSTAINABILITY AWARD

Brewery wins award among Portland, Oregon area companies for sustainability practices

Portland, Ore. – Full Sail Brewing Company is nestled between the mighty Columbia River and the snow-capped peak of Mt. Hood, just one hour east of Portland. So it’s not hard see the connection all of us at Full Sail feel for our environment. We do our best to be stewards of our environment and are dedicated to operating our brewery in the most responsible manner possible.

We are very proud to have been recognized for our efforts by Portland Office of Sustainable Development.  On April 17, 2008 Full Sail was the recipient of the 16th Annual Businesses for an Environmentally Sustainable Tomorrow (BEST) Awards for Medium sized company. An award presented for “demonstrating excellence in business practices that promote economic growth and environmental benefits.”

Because employees are the owners at Full Sail – and because many of us call beautiful Hood River home – we are empowered to run the brewery in a responsible manner every day.  “As much as we are committed to brew great beers, we are also committed to our community,” says James Emmerson, Full Sail’s Executive Brewmaster. “It would be impossible to live and work in the Gorge and not be inspired by the sheer beauty of the place. It is the blue skies, green forests, snow-capped mountains and pristine rivers surrounding us are that insure our dedication.”

Some of the company’s sustainability measures include:

    ·        Efficient brewhouse: The brewery is as sustainable and efficient as possible, starting with the parts of the building that were reclaimed and recycled when the brewery first opened in the old Diamond Fruit cannery. The company utilizes energy measures such as energy-efficient lighting and air compressors, and compresses the work week into four very productive days, which helps reduce water and energy consumption by 20 percent.

    ·        Sustainable brew process: Pure water literally flows from the peaks that surround the brewery, so Full Sail takes care to conserve this precious   resource. While average breweries consume six to eight gallons of water for every gallon of beer produced, Full Sail has reduced its consumption to a mere 3.45 gallons, and operates its own on-site wastewater treatment facility. Local farms supply the other essential ingredients for award-winning brews: 85 percent of hops and 95 percent of barley come straight from Northwest farms.

    ·        Reduce-Reuse-Recycle: Full Sail uses 100% recycled paperboard on all its packaging (and was one of the first in the industry to commit to long-term purchasing of recycled paper products). Everything from office paper to glass to stretch wrap to wooden pallets is recycled. Even dairy cows are beneficiaries of brewery waste: 4,160 tons of spent grain and 1,248 tons of spent yeast are sent back to farmers every year to use as feed for cows.

    ·        Community-wide practices: Full Sail purchases 140 blocks of Pacific Power Blue Sky renewable energy per month. This practice results in the reduction of 168 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, the equivalent of planting 33,000 trees. Full Sail also supports over 300 events and charities each year, with a focus on those in the Hood River area. Employees at the company have inspired environmental change among other businesses in the Hood River area as well. Full Sail was a founding member of the Hood River Chamber of Commerce’s Green Smart program, an initiative that helps businesses and organizations within the Hood River watershed increase their productivity and profitability by improving resource efficiency and by reducing waste and pollution.

Environmental practices are gaining the company’s Portland Riverplace Brewery and offices positive recognition as well. Recently, the Portland Office of Sustainable Development awarded Full Sail recognition as a RecycleWorks business for its excellent track record of recycling, reducing waste and buying environmentally preferable products.

    Beer Fights Cancer

Researchers are always looking for the magic bullet to kill cancer, and now they may have found it in a surprising place — a glass of beer! (Who knew?) It turns out that hops, which is the flavor component of beer, contains a cancer-fighting compound called xanthohumol.

Xanthohumol turns out to be toxic to several kinds of human cancer, including prostate, ovarian, breast, and colon. Further, it inhibits enzymes that can activate the development of cancer, and also helps detoxify carcinogens. It even seems to slow down tumor growth in the early stages. Scientists are trying to produce hops that contain even more xanthohumol, and the Germans are racing to develop a “health” beer.

But wait – there’s more! Other compounds in hops are potent phytoestrogens which may help with post-menopausal hot flashes and also prevent osteoporosis.

Beers that provide the most benefits contain the most hops, and include strong brews such as ale, stout, and porter. In general, the darker the beer, the better.

A GREAT DAY FOR AN ANNIVERSARY

On March 15, local faves at Roots Brewing celebrated three years of tasty brews, and not-to-distant faves in Hood River, Double Mountain Brewing, celebrated their rookie year of success. Congrats to all and here’s to many more!

The Portland Culinary Alliance has organized a cooking with beer event at BridgePort!

Beer and Berries: Tuesday March 18, 2008
    <http://pdxca.org/upcoming-events/>

Beer: Hops, yeast, barley, malt and water. This simple sounding combination yields an amazing array of beer styles, flavors and characteristics. While some cultures have cooked with beer for centuries, the growing craft brewing interest in America, particularly in craft beer loving Portland, (known as “Beervana” to some!), is helping bring the art of beer and food pairing, and cooking with beer more in the spotlight in the Northwest. There is more to beer and food than marinating meat for summer grilling and we hope you will join us for a delicious and informative evening at bridgeport brewpub + bakery.

Bridgeport, located in a historic brick building, is known for award winning craft beers, is a favorite neighborhood dining spot and has a growing list of fans of their artisan baked goods. Master baker Greg Mistell (Delphina’s, Pearl Bakery and his own bakery in NE Portland) consulted in the design and launch of the bridgeport bakery, and provided some of the artisan bread recipes, including the beer bread featured in our dinner. Our beer and food pairing evening will include opportunities to hear from Bridegport brewers and tour the Brewery, beer and food pairing insights from executive chef Jack Henniger, and commentary on the dessert and her Berry Bible book from Janie Hibler.

Bridgeport chef Jack Henniger has created a four course beer and food pairing dinner and will offer his perspective on using different styles of beer in cooking and in pairing with food elements. We will also learn about bridgeport’s bakery, producing crusty artisan breads and desserts, such as beeramisu.
    Menu
Appetizer: Black Strap Stout & Cheddar Spread; bridgeport bakery beer bread & butter
Plated Salad Course: Ropewalk Poached Oregon Beets, Sue’s Mixed Greens, Apples, Goat Cheese, Hazelnuts &
Honey-Poppyseed Vinaigrette, Paired with Ropewalk Amber Ale
Entree: Grilled Oregon Fish (FISH TBD, based on what is fresh and available), Bacon Braised Greens,
Crispy Polenta & Lemon-Garlic-Parsley Sauce, Paired with Bridgeport IPA
Dessert: Shortbread with Warm Oregon Marionberry-Port Sauce (from Janie Hibler’s Berry Bible), Paired with Bridgeport Stout
During dessert Janie Hibler will share the history of writing the Berry Bible book and talk about our dessert. Janie is a founding member and served as the first President of the Portland Culinary Alliance, is a past president of the International Association of Culinary Professionals, has authored three cookbooks and writes for a number of food publications.

Get Schooled At The 14th Annual Spring Beer & Wine Fest

What does an education taste like? Find out at the 14th annual Spring Beer & Wine Fest, it might be the sublime flavors of a bite of blue cheese paired with a sip of an India Pale Ale or the tantalizing tastes of perfectly grilled salmon with an Oregon pinot gris.

No matter what tastes you discover, you'll get some schooling at the Spring Beer & Wine Fest, March 21 & 22 at the Oregon Convention Center. With the motto "A Taste of the Best," the Fest is a sampler of the finest among local and regional wine, beer, spirits and food.

"The essence of the festival is mixing entertainment with educating taste buds," says event promoter Steve Woolard.

A success in its first year, the Tour de Cheese has expanded, and features tempting samples from world-class cheese makers. Festival-goers are encouraged to find their favorite flavor combinations by trying different cheeses with their beverage samples.

Looking for some extra credit? Check out the Chef's Stage, where you can watch special demonstrations on cooking with wine, beer or spirits -- and eat the tasty results from the class. Or, sit in on a seminar. Several will be held each day, including a repeat of last year's standing-room-only Cheese Smackdown, a "battle" between wine and beer experts as they match their beverages with selected cheese -- and let the audience decide which pairing is best.

"It's kind of like the American Idol of food," says fest Marketing Director Lisa Morrison, adding that other seminars include Chocolate 101, Classy Cocktails With Indie Spirits and a panel discussion on beer and food pairings with some of the industry's brightest luminaries.

The Spring Beer & Wine Fest also is a competition for both wineries and breweries, with experts judging entries either ahead of the festival, as is the case with wineries, or during the fest, which what happens for breweries. Winners are announced at the fest, which can help attendees discover something new to sip. Fest-goers also are encouraged to participate in the People's Choice awards and name their favorite quaffs at the fest!

Even the most studious of classmates wants a break once in a while, which is why the Music Stage will be kicking it up with some of the Northwest's hottest bands, including The Insomniacs and Eric Hatcher and the Worker Bees, Ty Curtis and Sweet City Slang.

"The festival encourages responsible drinking by additional features such as cooking demonstrations, outstanding live music with a dance floor and our Food Court, offering gourmet items from local restaurants," Woolard says.  "Even our vendors and exhibitors have products and services -- including arts and crafts, jewelry and massages -- for those looking for more to do."

So sharpen your wits and your taste buds, because glass is in session at the Spring Beer & Wine Fest. An education never tasted so good!

Cheers to Belgian Beers event at Roots on April 5, 2008

This Oregon Brewers Guild event will have numerous brewers making belgian beers using the same yeast strain. Mark Your calenders. We will post more as we get details. Roots Organic Brewery is at 1520 SE 7TH,

World’s Largest Organic Brewers Festival returns to Portland, Oregon June 20-21, 2008

The North American Organic Brewers Festival which poured 50 organic beers to 7000 people June 8-9th 2007, returns to Portland’s Overlook Park June 20-21, 2008. In its fourth year, the festival will again feature organic beers from across North America, and Europe.

The 2007 event raised over $2000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and the Oregon Tilth, a certification body dedicated to organic agriculture. It also brought in hundreds of cans of food for the Oregon Food Bank.

The NAOBF celebrates the diversity and range of beer styles being brewed organically; from pilsner to pale ale, saison to stout, amber ale to lambics. Brewers from across Cascadia, the heart of organic brewing, pour their beers alongside organic pioneers from Europe, such as Pinkus Mueller, from Muenster, Germany. Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Northern California, often referred to as Cascadia, lead the continent in the number of organic breweries, with nearly half of Oregon’s 80 breweries having produced an organic beer, since the first Organic Brewers Symposium in 2002.

Organic brewers have hewn out a market for themselves, with organic beer growing by leaps and bounds along with the organic foods sector. In 2006 North American organic brewers made over 40,000 barrels, with 2007 production expected to increase by more than 25%. Brewed with ingredients grown without pesticides, herbicides, and chemical fertilizers, organic beer is good for the environment, the farmer, and the consumer.

In addition to pouring organic beers the NAOBF features sustainability oriented vendors, live music, and local and organic food. The festival is powered by biodiesel, composts food waste, and will use biodegradable tasting cups.

Overlook Park, located on North Interstate Avenue between Failing and Fremont Street has its own stop on the MAX Yellow line. Riders of MAX, Portland’s award-winning light rail system may present their validated ticket for a $1 discount on the tasting mug. Overlook Park features a view of the Willamette River and downtown Portland.

The North American Organic Brewers Festival is presented by Roots Organic Brewing Company, Portland’s first all-organic brewery. Brewer-owned Roots is located at 1520 SE 7th Avenue, Portland, Oregon 97214 just off of Hawthorne Boulevard. 503-235-7668 www.rootsbrewing.com

For more information, or to participate in the festival contact festival organizer Abram Goldman-Armstrong at abe@brewingnews.com or 503-730-5597. The festival’s website at www.naobf.org will be updated for 2008 in January.

    OLD KNUCKLEHEAD JOHN

In honor of their newest Old Knucklehead Barley Wine Style Ale, No. 12, BridgePort Brewing Company is saluting a pillar in the local brewing community, John DeBenedetti, as the next “knucklehead,” a brewery tradition since 1989. As this vintage's honorary knucklehead, John DeBenedetti is the steward and owner of F.H. Steinbart Company, a family-owned brewing supplier since 1918. John provided essentials to BridgePort's brewmaster, Karl Ockert, when he was making his first batches of home brew in his mother's basement. Brewed with double the malts and hops and aged in bourbon barrels, the 12th vintage of Old Knucklehead is a slightly stronger version at 10-percent ABV and will
    be sold in 22-ounce bottles.

Pelican  Pub and Brewery in Pacific City offers up some great ways to welcome in 2008!

If you loved Pelican’s Stormwatcher Barley Wine last year, you are going to like this year's even better Stormwatch ‘07(13.0% ABV).  But heck, why not compare them side by side with Vertical Tasting at Pelican Pub in Pacific City.  Right now, Pelican is offering their Stormwatcher’s Winterfest Vertical Tasting 2007.   You can try Stormwatch from 2003 to 2007. Taste how Stormwatcher's has evolved over the past five years and how slow, controlled aging has a wonderful effect on the character of these beers.

No Barley Wines, you say! Pelican Pub and Brewery also have some fine Belgium style ales for the New Year

Le Pelican Brun - Available in Bottles (7.5%  ABV) (Full of intriguing malt flavors, Le Pelican Brun was conceived by the fertile imaginations of the team of Pelican Brewers and inspired by the many brewing traditions of Belgium. With a deep reddish-brown color that suggests an Abbey -Style Dubbel, but a rich yeast-driven aroma reminiscent of a Saison, Le Pelican Brun serves up coffee-like, cocoa and caramel malt flavors with hints of earthiness and a captivating spiciness. Medium-bodied and highly drinkable, Le Pelican Brun is also rich, complex and satisfying.

Grand Cru de Pelican – Draft& Bottles Available now! (9.5% abv) Grand Cru de Pelican is the result of inspiration, creativity, and imagination. With a nod to the great brewing traditions of Belgium, we have been inspired to create this dark, sensous brew. Grand Cru de Pelican entices with a rich, complex aroma, and satisfies with deep malty and caramel flavors. Spicy, aromatic flavors provide a harmonious counterpoint to the malty foundation of this robust beer. A snappy finish and medium-light body enhance the smooth drinkability of this beer.

Saison du Pelican - Available in bottles! The "Saison" ales of Belgium inspire our special vintage ale, Saison du Pelican. "Saison" is the French word for season, because these ales were traditionally brewed in the autumn or winter for consumption during the late summer harvest. With a spicy, herbal aroma and a snappy, refreshing finish, Saison du Pelican combines traditional flavors with excellent drinkability.(6% ABV)

Widmer Brothers Brewing and the Oregon Brew Crew Team Up to Discover the Next Great Craft Beer

Widmer Brothers Brewing Company and the Oregon Brew Crew, one of the largest and oldest home brewing clubs in the U.S., are working together to discover and develop new and unique craft beers. The partnership, known as the "Collaborator Project," began in the spring of
1997 when members of the Oregon Brew Crew lamented the fact that there were many outstanding beer styles that were not being brewed by their local breweries. As a result, Kurt and Rob Widmer, members of the Oregon Brew Crew themselves, invited members of the home brewing club to work with the Widmer Brothers Brewing team in identifying and creating the unique beers they felt were missing. 2007 marks the Collaborator Project's 10th anniversary.

"Before Kurt and I quit our jobs to brew beer full-time, we were home brewers and members of the Oregon Brew Crew. Now over twenty years later we consider it a privilege to still be associated with the OBC and home brewing," said Rob Widmer, co-founder of Widmer Brothers Brewing Company.

One of the most celebrated creations born from the Collaborator Project is the Snow Plow Milk Stout, a holiday beer brewed at the Widmer Brothers brewing facility in Portland, Oregon. Snowplow is a two-time medal winner at the Great American Beer Festival, garnering the gold medal in both 2002 and
2004 thanks in part to its unique combination of dark chocolate, coffee and roasted malt.

"Collaborator beers are designed to be different rather than imitative, so each beer must succeed in finding a niche not filled by any other beer available," said Noel Blake, member of the Oregon Brew Crew and the Collaborator Project Board of Directors.

For members of the Oregon Brew Crew the Collaborator Project provides an opportunity to showcase their home-brews on a grand scale.

"Being able to participate in the project is a fantastic experience for any home brewer. We get to plan the recipe, assist in the brewing, and help market the beer. It's very satisfying to see knowledgeable beer consumers appreciate "your" beer," said Noel.

The Oregon Brew Crew is a non-profit club dedicated to the education and appreciation of home brewing and craft beer. The largest club in the Pacific Northwest and one of the oldest in the United States, the Oregon Brew Crew formed shortly after home brewing was legalized in July of 1979.

Kurt and Rob Widmer began as home brewers before founding their own brewery in 1984 in Portland, OR. Widmer Brothers Brewing Company is now one of the top five craft breweries in the nation and brewers of the Nation's most popular wheat beer, Widmer Hefeweizen.

Brewers Continue to Grow!

The Brewers Association, the trade association that tabulates industry data for craft brewers, reports craft beer sales and growth continue to break records. The volume of craft beer sold in the first half of 2007 rose 11% compared to this same period in 2006 and dollar growth increased 14%. For the first time ever craft beer has exceeded more than a 5% dollar share of total beer sales.

Overall, the U.S. beer industry sold one million more barrels in the first half of 2007 compared to 2006, with 400,000 of these new barrels produced by craft breweries. This equates to 3.768 million barrels of craft beer sold in the first two quarters of 2007 compared to 3.368 million barrels sold in the first half of 2006.

Scan data from Information Resources, Inc. provide additional data points that confirm strength for the segment. Craft beer sales in the supermarket channel through July 15th, 2007 showed a 17.4% increase in dollar sales compared to the same period in 2006. This growth in sales was higher than any other alcohol beverage category.

"The 1,400 small, independent and traditional craft brewers in the U.S. have hit their stride," said Paul Gatza, Director of the Brewers Association. "United States craft brewers are making many of the world's best beers, and the marketplace is responding."

US Beer Sales Growth GraphCoupled with the growth statistics has been a tidal wave of media coverage in the first half of 2007 including NBC's Today Show on July 3 stating, "Beer is the new wine and can go with just about any food." Additionally, Gallup, in its latest poll on alcohol beverages, announced for the second straight year that "Beer Again Edges Out Wine as Americans' Drink of Choice."

Julia Herz, Director of Craft Beer Marketing for the Brewers Association concluded, "Craft beer market share is steadily and consistently growing. A grassroots movement is responsible for this success as appreciators continue to trade up."

Study shines light

A 2006 study found that the average American walks about 900 miles per year.

Another study found that Americans drink an average of 22 gallons of beer per year.

That means, on average, Americans get 41 miles per gallon.  Isn't that great!!
